It is a national key comprehensive university with students from various ethnic groups. It is one of two in Xinjiang entering the national “211 Project.” On December 30, 2000, the former Xinjiang University and Xinjiang Engineering Institute merged into a new Xinjiang University. In the past 78 years, it has seen 65,000 students graduated from this University.

URUMQI formerly known as Dihua is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the far northwest of the People's Republic of China.
According to the Guinness Book of Records, Urumqi is the most remote city from any sea in the world. Urumqi has seen significant economic development since the 1990s and currently serves as a regional transport node and a cultural, political and commercial center.
